# Can an RPE or other metal appliance be left in place during an MRI?

It is recommended that any fixed metal appliances are removed prior to an MRI scan, as they can cause artifacts in the image captured by the MRI.

However, removal is at the discretion of the Doctors. Most of our appliances are made with a variety of metals such as chromium cobalt and stainless steel.
